As a wedding photographer who began my journey in psychology, I've noticed that the most impactful photos come from couples who feel truly present in the moment. But let's be real – wedding day jitters are totally normal! That's why I'm sharing my favourite mindfulness practices to help you stay grounded and connected on your special day.
We've all heard of "butterflies in your stomach," right? Those pre-wedding butterflies are your excitement taking flight! But sometimes, they need a little guidance. That's where mindfulness comes in – it's like having a secret superpower that helps you transform nervous energy into beautiful moments.
Pin these somewhere special (maybe your getting-ready room mirror?):
"Our love shines through in every moment"
"We're present and grateful for this beautiful day"
"Our connection is natural and effortless"
"We trust in the process and embrace the joy"
"Our authentic selves make the most beautiful memories"
Here’s a little secret from behind the lens: the most breathtaking, timeless photos don’t come from perfect poses or practiced smiles. They’re born from real moments, raw emotions, and two people so deeply lost in their love that the camera fades into the background.
Take some time in the weeks leading up to your wedding to practice these techniques together. Think of it as a date night with intention! Not only will it help you feel more grounded on your big day, but it’ll also give you tools to carry into your marriage.
Remember, your wedding day is all about celebrating your unique love story. These little mindfulness practices are just here to help you savor every magical moment—and don’t worry, I’ll be there to capture all that beautiful, genuine joy!
THE WEDDING DAY BUTTERFLY EFFECT
Remember that iconic moment in Titanic when Jack tells Rose, "Just breathe," right before they dance? He was onto something! Breathing can be a beautiful way to connect with your partner. Here are a couple of easy exercises to try together:
THE 4-7-8 LOVE BREATH:
Think of it as your love song: inhale for 4 counts (taking in all the joy), hold for 7 (savoring the moment), and exhale for 8 (releasing any worries). It’s amazing how something so simple can feel so grounding and powerful!
THE HARMONY BREATH:
Sit or stand facing each other, hold hands, and breathe together. Syncing your breath might seem small, but it’s surprisingly intimate and deeply calming. Plus, it makes for some stunningly heartfelt photos!

THE 5 SENSES CHECK-IN:
Make it fun! Take turns with your partner:
See: "I see your beautiful smile"
Hear: "I hear our favourite song playing"
Smell: "I smell those amazing flowers you chose"
Taste: "I can still taste our morning coffee"
Touch: "I feel your hand in mine"
THE RING REMINDNER
When things feel overwhelming, touch your ring (or soon-to-be ring) and let it remind you of why you're here today. It's not about the perfect timeline or the perfect pose – it's about your perfect love story.
